Georgian PM says EU bureaucracy neglects economy, interferes in other countries’ democratic processes

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday said that the European bureaucracy was preoccupied with interfering in the democratic processes of other countries instead of focusing on overcoming their own economic problems.

In his remarks, Kobakhidze discussed global economic trends, noting the significant decline of the European Union’s share in the world economy since 2008.

“What we have been discussing for some time is now being acknowledged by the current United States administration. This includes economic trends, where we have repeatedly pointed out that the EU’s share of the global economy has drastically decreased since 2008”, the PM said.

The Prime Minister noted that in 2008, the EU accounted for 30% of the global economy, a figure that has dropped to 17.5% by 2024.

“This trend is clearly downward. By the end of this year, the EU’s share will be even lower than 17.5%. These figures, with minor variations, are reflected in the relevant U.S. documents. This is straightforward and indisputable proof that economic trends in the EU are very negative. Simple statistics show that while the EU’s share fell from 30% to 17.5%, the U.S. economy’s share has increased. Similarly, in 2008, China’s economy was valued at $4 trillion, and now it has grown to approximately $18 trillion, surpassing the EU”, Kobakhidze continued.

“The EU has remained stagnant, China has caught up, and the US economy has nearly doubled from $15 trillion to almost $30 trillion. This demonstrates the consequences of European bureaucracy’s ineffectiveness. Instead of focusing on solving their own economic challenges, the European bureaucracy is occupied with interfering in the democratic processes of other countries. This indicates a loss of sovereignty, and a non-sovereign European bureaucracy will only harm the EU. Therefore, we must hope this situation changes; otherwise, these trends will not stop”, the PM concluded.
