Georgian FM confident US-Georgia relations will improve

Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili on Wednesday expressed her confidence that the deteriorated relations between Georgia and the United States would change, stressing that Georgia was remaining an “important partner” for the United States.
In her interview with Rustavi 2 TV channel, Botchorishvili claimed the United States’ decision to halt its partnership mechanism with Georgia was related to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict in the region.
“We link this attitude towards Georgia to the ongoing war in Ukraine and, generally, to the situation in the region. In this regard, we have repeatedly heard the position of the US President-elect, how he sees the urgent need to resolve this conflict in our region. Even before taking office at the White House, he took certain steps in this direction, and we see that work is underway on this issue, both with the Ukrainian Government and with Russia”, the Minister said
Botchorishvili added that “both Russia and Ukraine will have to start thinking about reaching an agreement and exploring diplomatic solutions”.
She further noted that the US President-elect was not expected to immediately focus on Georgia as soon as he entered the White House.
“The relationships will be different, and this is based on the circumstances we have today. These deteriorated relations will change, and this situation will be different in a few months. I am confident this will happen because Georgia is an important country and a crucial partner, including for the United States. The strategic partnership we had was not something abstract, there were specific reasons why the US wanted a strategic partnership with Georgia - precisely because of its importance, and that importance has not gone away. It is still here, and of course, I hope so”, Botchorishvili said.
She further emphasised the importance for Georgia’s relations with all strategic partners to be meaningful and substantive.
“We have said this repeatedly. Unfortunately, this was not possible under the current [US] administration. We have sent numerous messages expressing our desire to make these relations substantive and ensure that our partnership is genuinely strategic”, the FM concluded.
