Imedi TV exclusive: defendants in October 4 attempted coup case admit guilt, seek plea agreements

Several individuals charged in connection with the attempted government overthrow on October 4 have reportedly requested plea agreements with the prosecution.
According to exclusive documents obtained by Imedi TV, eight of the detainees have formally submitted written confessions. In these statements, the defendants address prosecutors directly, acknowledging their involvement and requesting the formalisation of plea deals in exchange for lighter sentencing or reduced charges.
“I sincerely admit and repent the crime. I understand the gravity of the offence committed and feel deep remorse. I regret my actions and am ready to cooperate” - with statements of this nature, several individuals accused of participating in a group crime and attempting to seize strategic facilities have appealed to prosecutors.
Giorgi Korkia expressed his intention, in the interest of swift and effective justice, to conclude a plea agreement based on his full admission of guilt.
Defendant Giorgi Kirvalidze also admitted and repented the crime, addressing prosecutors with a request to reach a plea agreement regarding both the charge and the sentence. He stated that he sincerely acknowledges the offence committed.
Defendant Avtandil Topchishvili said: “I fully acknowledge the charges brought against me and sincerely admit what happened. I deeply regret my actions, and this remorse will likely remain with me for the rest of my life. I respectfully request that you conclude a plea agreement with me”.
Ramaz Jorbenadze likewise appealed for a plea agreement and asked that his willingness to cooperate with the investigation be taken into account.
“I fully understand the gravity and nature of the act imputed to me, as well as the legal consequences of admitting the charge, including the fact that concluding a plea agreement does not release me from civil liability. I do not dispute any of the evidence presented by the prosecution in court. I fully admit the charge brought against me”.
The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia confirmed that it would only consider plea agreements with those defendants who proactively submit requests and demonstrate sincere repentance.
“Information is being circulated through various media outlets claiming that the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia offered plea agreements to defendants in the October 4 case. We clarify that the prosecution will discuss plea agreements only with those defendants who independently apply to the Prosecutor’s Office with such a request and who, at the same time, admit and sincerely repent the acts committed”, the statement said.
Among those seeking plea agreements are individuals whom the opposition had previously portrayed as political prisoners.
Following the high-profile violent events of October 4, several detainees are now requesting cooperation with the prosecution.
On October 4, 2025, large-scale protests in Tbilisi escalated into a dramatic confrontation, as a group of radical demonstrators attempted to storm the presidential palace. The unrest unfolded on the same day Georgia held municipal elections.
Authorities detained five opposition figures, including Paata Burchuladze. They now face charges of plotting to overthrow the government - an offence that carries the possibility of lengthy prison sentences.
Government officials described the events as a failed coup attempt allegedly orchestrated with foreign backing. Prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze characterised the protests as “an attempted overthrow of the constitutional order”.
