Georgian Parliament official says regions “backbone” of state, key priority for Gov’t

Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on European Integration, on Thursday said that regions are the backbone of the state and that their development is a key priority for the Government.

In his remarks, Makhashvili noted that a lot is being done in various areas, but it is important to ensure coordination of all these efforts.

“Many things are being implemented in separate areas, whether it is agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure, education, and so on. However, at the same time, it is important to coordinate all of this”, he said.

“During meetings with the population, it has repeatedly become clear that many things may be carried out separately, but what is lacking is coordination and bringing these efforts together, so that they do not remain autonomous, chaotic processes carried out independently. Instead, there should be a unified approach, ensuring that budget funds are invested as efficiently as possible in solving the problems of the population”, the Chair continued.

Makhashvili added that in this regard, this new position, especially under the leadership of Mamuka Mdinaradze, will be the right step. The main goal is precisely to make state governance as effective as possible.

Mamuka Mdinaradze will take the position of State Minister for Regional Policy. Until legislative amendments are adopted, he serves as the Minister of Regional Development.

The position of State Minister for Law Enforcement Agencies will be abolished in the first week of September.
