PM says Georgia may consider adopting new legislation in response to ‘coordinated attacks’ on national identity

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday said that his Government could consider adopting new legislation if necessary to counter “coordinated attacks” on the country’s national identity.

In his remarks, Kobakhidze noted that his Government was doing everything possible to prevent “the artificial imposition of hatred” on Georgian society and stressed that a response to such actions was necessary.

“We have not yet discussed this draft law, but what I can say is that there is certainly a need to respond to coordinated attacks against our national identity. We are doing everything to ensure that hatred is not artificially imposed on our society. Relevant laws have already been adopted for this purpose, and even those were protested. Those who opposed these laws are the very people who, both from inside and outside the country, are artificially sowing hatred and aggression in our society”, he said.

The Prime Minister also claimed that insults directed at Georgian saints, prominent public figures and historical kings were part of a coordinated campaign aimed at weakening the country’s national identity.

“These are not simply untalented individuals. They are people carrying out a specific agenda, the essence of which is to weaken our national identity. We must take every measure to counter this, and if adopting a law becomes necessary, we can discuss that as well”, Kobakhidze concluded.
