Georgian Parliament official accuses Saakashvili government of signing “betrayal” resolution after 2008 war

Gia Volski, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and the First Vice Speaker of the Parliament, on Wednesday accused the government of former President Mikheil Saakashvili of signing what he called an “absolutely incomprehensible and treacherous resolution” shortly after the 2008 Russia-Georgia war.
“Before August 2008, especially in July, it was absolutely clear that military actions were inevitable, especially as Russia was carrying out a full mobilization of its military units near the Roki Tunnel. Despite this, suspiciously, no alarm was raised, Saakashvili’s government did not appeal to the National Security Council, and moreover, when the war ended, before the bodies of our soldiers had even cooled, they signed an absolutely incomprehensible, treacherous resolution”, Volski said.
Volski claimed that only after the Georgian Dream party came to power was it possible for Georgia to win the case at the European Court of Human Rights.
“The change in the rhetoric of the National Movement was determined by instructions they received. At that time, nobody cared about Georgia, and Saakashvili felt completely free - he was in his palace. Russia’s advance toward Tbilisi was a story invented by him. Russia got what it wanted”, he concluded.
