Parliament Committee Chair calls on US to review restrictions imposed on Georgian judge following ECHR’s decision

Anri Okhanashvili, the Chair of the Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee, on Monday called for a review of the restrictions imposed on some Georgian judges by the United States, emphasising the need for corrective measures in light of their compliance with national law, as confirmed by the European Court of Human Rights.
Okhanashvili’s comments followed after the European Court of Human Rights on Tuesday declined to consider the claim of Nika Gvaramia, the founder of the opposition-minded Mtavari Arkhi channel, regarding his earlier conviction for improper commercial deals in 2015 and 2019 during his time at the helm of the Rustavi 2 TV.
In 2022 the judge Lasha Chkhikvadze sentenced Gvaramia to 3.5 years for abuse of power over his managerial decisions when he ran Rustavi 2 TV. Chkhikvadze was later removed from the list of participants of the American training program and, accordingly, from the list of judges to travel to the United States.
“When the judge [Lasha Chkhikvadze] acted in accordance with the law, [and] the corresponding action was confirmed by the European Court of Human Rights, and at the same time some kind of restrictions remain in force regarding this judge, this needs to be reviewed”, Okhanashvili said.
“This not only needs to be reviewed but more steps should be taken so that a judge has the feeling that acting according to the law and the constitution is the only way and there is no alternative”, he concluded.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Sunday said that domestic foreign influence agents running Soviet-style campaigns against the country’s judiciary were characterised by lack of transparency, and further noted that “this is the root cause of corruption”.
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Saturday vowed that the legislative body would do its “best” to stop “unfair” attacks aimed at “tarnishing” the reputation of the country’s judiciary and “harming” the Georgian state.
