Ex-President’s mother, UNM party leader seek support in European Parliament for “strictest possible” resolution against Georgian Government

Giuli Alasania, the mother of the imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili, and Giorgi Chaladze, the leader of the opposition United National Movement party, on Thursday departed for Strasbourg reportedly at Saakashvili's behest, seeking support from Saakashvili's lobbyists in the European Parliament to pass the strictest possible resolution against the Georgian Government.

The source told Imedi TV that Alasania and Chaladze were tasked with meeting with Saakashvili's lobbyists in Strasbourg to strategise on drafting the strictest possible resolution.

Their agenda is likely to include discussions with key figures such as Petras Auštrevičius and Viola von Cramon, prominent MEPs known for their involvement in Georgia’s domestic affairs.

The aim is to secure their backing for the resolution and outline future collaboration plans, including the specifics of remuneration for MEPs involved in lobbying activities.

Mamuka Mdinaradze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party in the Parliament, on Wednesday denounced some members of the European Parliament for calling for the release of the imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili.

Mdinaradze’s comment followed after the MEPs on Tuesday called for the release of Saakashvili and sanctioning Georgia during the debates held in the European Parliament regarding the domestic bill on the transparency of foreign influence.

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday said sanctioning the Georgian people was “absurd”, and further claimed that this was a “method of intimidation” by a group of members of the European Parliament, who wanted an “obedient public” that would not ask questions.
