PM says alleged conspiracy to assassinate Bidzina Ivanishvili not “surprising” taking into account his role in domestic politics

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday said the preparation of the assassination of Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder and Honorary Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, was not “surprising” taking into account his role in the domestic politics.
Kobakhidze’s comment followed after the Georgian State Security Service had started investigation into the preparation of a terrorist act and conspiracy to overthrow the country’s Government, as well as the preparation of the assassination of Ivanishvili.
“Bidzina Ivanishvili is the leader of our ruling [Georgian Dream] party, its Honorary Chair. Beyond that, you are aware of the role of Bidzina Ivanishvili in Georgian politics, his influence on political processes. Therefore, it is not surprising that Bidzina Ivanishvili was the target of such a possible [terrorist] act”, Kobakhidze said.
“Of course, it is not surprising that when it comes to ill-wishers of our country, the target for them is Bidzina Ivanishvili, because it is Bidzina Ivanishvili who is the guarantor of peace and development in this country”, he concluded.
Kobakhidze further added that the Georgian Government would do its best to prevent such acts in the future.
