Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Thursday claimed both the resolution of the Council of Europe and the conclusions of Tagliavini Commission were “direct evidence” that “unmistakably” confirmed the betrayal committed by the authoritarian regime of the imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili.
“As for the role of these documents in the process of this investigation, of course, both documents are direct evidence. In one case, the United National Movement party directly signed and supported the resolution, and thus they recognised the start of the war [in 2008]. Therefore, this is one of the documentary evidences regarding their betrayal. As for the Tagliavini report, there was no signing procedure, but they agreed with the evidence and conclusions presented in the Tagliavini document”, Kobakhidze said.
“Therefore, both the document of the Council of Europe and the conclusions of Tagliavini are direct evidence that unmistakably confirms the betrayal committed by the United National Movement party and Saakashvili's authoritarian regime. However, beyond this, it is important to examine other evidence in order to clearly execute justice against those people who caused so much damage to our country in 2008”, he concluded.
Tagliavini was commissioned by the European Union to prepare the report on the 2008 war.
The Political Council of the ruling Georgian Dream party on Tuesday said it was “vital” to conduct a public legal process over the 2008 war and to ensure that the domestic public learnt who had committed “grave treason” against the country and its citizens in order to establish “long-term” peace and stability in Georgia.
