Parliament Speaker claims opposition, certain NGOs see war as path to restoring territorial integrity

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Monday said there was no greater goal than the restoration of the country's territorial integrity, and further claimed that “as it turns out, the opposition and some NGOs see this only through war”.
In his remarks, Papuashvili stressed there was no greater goal than the restoration of territorial integrity, which “can only be achieved through peaceful means”.
“We are talking about the territorial integrity of our country, about our homeland, from which two regions have been torn away. By following these speculations of the radical opposition and NGOs, you are diminishing your attitude towards the homeland”, Papuashvili noted.
“We have no greater goal than restoring territorial integrity. Some parties have other goals and are willing to sacrifice our territorial integrity to achieve them. As it turns out, the opposition and some NGOs envision the restoration of territorial integrity through war. They showed this in 2022 when they talked about using a window of opportunity [amid the ongoing war in Ukraine], and they are showing it now, declaring that reconciliation should not take place, that Ossetians are culprits, and blaming the entire nation for war”, the Speaker continued.
Papuashvili further added that there was another path - the peaceful restoration of territorial integrity, which required reconciliation.
“There is no other way but reconciliation. This path involves understanding how we reached the point of separation, this path involves mutual forgiveness, and remorse where needed. Regarding Russia, that is about the de-occupation. Regarding Ossetia, it is a matter of reconciliation. It was under the Georgian Dream Government that the European Court of Human Rights had recognised the occupation”, he noted.
Papuashvili stressed that Georgians and Ossetians were all victims, saying “just as those war criminals who tortured Georgian soldiers don’t represent the Ossetian people, neither did Mikheil Saakashvili represent the Georgian people”.
