Meta flags information spread by domestic opposition as “disinformation” based on report from fact-checkers

Meta (formerly the Facebook company) on Monday flagged the information spread by the domestic opposition as “disinformation” based on a report from fact-checkers.

The matter concerns the photo of the map of Georgia shown by the the Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Monday, where the country's Russian-occupied territories were marked in grey colour, while all other constituencies, where the ruling Georgian Dream party had its delegates for the parliamentary elections, were marked in blue colour.

Because the photo shown at the presentation could not be clearly seen on the TV screen, the opposition claimed that the Parliament Speaker had used a map on which the occupied territories were not part of Georgia.

The fact-checking platform GeoFacts independently verified the image in live broadcasts on Imedi TV and Papuashvili’s Facebook page, confirming that the occupied areas on the map had indeed been perceived as marked in white colour.

Additionally, the presentation file was sent to media outlets, clearly showing that the occupied territories were marked in grey colour.
