Georgia’s ruling party official calls German Government’s responses on Ambassador Fischer “very vague”

Levan Machavariani

Levan Machavariani, the First Deputy Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party faction, on Friday commented on the recent controversy surrounding Peter Fischer, the German Ambassador to Georgia, describing the responses from the German side as “very vague”.

Machavariani’s comment followed the questions submitted by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party regarding Fischer. Berlin confirms that Fischer held a meeting with opposition representatives in Georgia. However, the German Government declined to provide any concrete details about the encounter.

Machavariani also responded to the German Government's denial that Fischer rented an apartment from the opposition leader Mamuka Khazaradze, noting such answers raised even more suspicion about the Ambassador's actions in Georgia.

“The answers were very vague. It is certainly not new to us that the German Ambassador had meetings with the [domestic] radical opposition. In fact, they were not just meeting - they were acting in sync until he was recalled for consultations. As for the fact that he allegedly did not rent a residence from Mr. Mamuka Khazaradze, we all know that this information was made public and was confirmed by them. When we hear such answers, of course, there is even more reason for our citizens to doubt the actions that the German Ambassador has been taking in Georgia for years”, he said.
