Georgian Parliament Speaker warns EU headed toward “total loss of European identity”

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Friday said that the “end point” of current European leaders’ governance would be “the complete erasure of European identity”, responding to recent comments made by EU officials amid US criticism of Brussels.
In his remarks, Papuashvili noted the public now “clearly sees how truthful and correct the policy of the Georgian Dream has been, especially in recent years”, adding that all risks have materialised, all hypocrites have been exposed.
“It is now evident how important it was for the Georgian Government to withstand the enormous pressure coming from the EU and Brussels, often through their subordinate parties and NGOs”, he said.
The Speaker further claimed that without resisting this pressure, Georgia would have been “in the same situation as Ukraine - unable to secure peace and trapped in a state of war created by hypocritical political leaders”.
Commenting on relations between Washington and Brussels, Papuashvili said the new US administration had a new role - to openly and clearly tell the truth to European bureaucrats and political leaders.
He further added that the US administration had already told the EU that “under the guise of European values, the Union has turned into a space that restricts freedom of speech and democracy, becoming a source of conflict rather than peace”.
“This is the moment when European leaders must wake up”, Papuashvili stressed, arguing that they have “strayed from themselves and from the will of the European people”.
He highlighted that the only solution for them was “to return to fulfilling the will of their own citizens, from whom they are now so detached”.
“The new [US] administration has also outlined the outcome - the loss of European identity. The final destination of today’s European leaders’ governance is the complete erasure of European identity”, Papuashvili concluded.
