Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s European Integration Committee, on Wednesday responded to a statement by Republican Congresswoman Ana Paulina Luna, who recently declared that “it’s time to ditch the EU and restore sovereignty to individual nations, in Europe and across the globe”.
In his remarks, Makhashvili stressed it was clear that the United States was maintaining a critical stance toward the EU bureaucracy.
“Time and again, Brussels’ policies have contradicted not only the interests of Europeans but, in many cases, have also harmed relations with the United States. Therefore, it is natural that America’s approach to Brussels, its policies, and its decisions is critical”, he said.
“We expect this cold geopolitical breeze blowing from the US toward the EU to continue. Personally, I have little expectation that Brussels’ bureaucracy will change its positions, precisely because doing so would mean abandoning its current practices entirely. However, U.S. policy is designed not to deepen relations with the existing bureaucracy, but to strengthen patriotic forces that support national policies within member states”, the official concluded.
