Georgian Parliament official says attack on free media aims to weaken power of truth

Levan Makhashvili

Levan Makhashvili, the chair of the Georgian Parliament’s European integration committee, on Tuesday criticised the British government’s actions targeting independent media - Imedi TV and PosTV.

“They clearly see that today information and the truth carry great power, including as a shield against lies and disinformation, and this is exactly what they are striking at”, he said.

In his interview with Imedi TV, Makhashvili noted that the only reason for punishing these two TV channels was their attempt to deliver information to the public honestly, allowing society to make well-informed decisions.

“We are witnessing how some are forced to impose their version of the ‘truth’ on other countries. They clearly see that today information and the truth have significant influence, including as a shield against lies and disinformation, and this is precisely what they are attacking”, the official pointed out.

“Television channels - Imedi, PosTV - when they attempt to deliver information to the public with honesty so society can make well-informed decisions, this is where the main fear lies, and that is why they decided to punish these two TV channels”, Makhashvili concluded.
