Levan Makhashvili, the chair of the Georgian Parliament’s European integration committee, on Thursday said it would be misleading to claim that Georgia has high expectations regarding a reset of relations with the European Union, citing what he described as an “unrestrained campaign” by Brussels bureaucrats.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Makhashvili noted that although expectations are limited, positive developments are emerging in relations with individual EU member states.
“We have seen and continue to see such an unrestrained campaign from Brussels bureaucrats that it would be misleading to say we have high expectations in this regard [resetting relations with the EU]. However, there are indeed healthy developments within member states. We have constructive relations with them, and this is not limited only to Hungary and Slovakia”, he said.
The official added that the same approach applied to relations with the United States.
“The same applies to the United States. We are making maximum efforts to build relations with those who are genuinely interested in this direction. Now they have begun talking about the need to engage in dialogue with Russia. They see what is happening in the Middle East - oil and gas prices have increased significantly - and it seems that step by step they will also return to business relations with Russia”, Makhashvili concluded.
