During a solemn ceremony celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Georgian Defence Forces, Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili delivered a keynote address emphasising that national peace is the strategic outcome of calculated policy and military strength.

In his address, Papuashvili noted that nowadays the Georgian Defence Forces represent a modern, professional, and development-oriented institution.

“Peace is not accidental. Peace is the result of calculated policy, strong institutions, reliable partnerships, and the unwavering protection of national interests. It is under such conditions that the Defence Forces acquire their full significance: they not only defend the country, but also serve as guarantors of peace. The strong backing that the state possesses in the form of the Defence Forces makes the government’s peace policy more flexible”, he said.

“Our servicemen have extensive experience participating in international missions, while at the same time defending our land every day. This is a great responsibility and, at the same time, a great honor”, the speaker continued.

Papuashvili highlighted the deeper historical significance of the date, noting that it coincides with approximately 1 700 years since Christianity was declared the state religion in Georgia - an event that shaped the nation’s spiritual identity, culture, and values.

“Today’s date carries even deeper significance, as we also commemorate one of the most important events in Georgian history - 1,700 years since Christianity was declared the state religion. This was an event that defined our nation’s spiritual identity, its culture, values, and historical path”, the speaker added.

Papuashvili further noted that Christian faith taught Georgians unity, self-sacrifice, resilience, and love for one’s neighbor - values that continue to live within the Georgian army to this day.

“It is upon this spiritual foundation that the heroic spirit of our soldiers stands, along with the belief that defending the homeland is not only a duty, but also a profound moral act”, he said.

The speaker expressed special gratitude to the families of servicemembers.

“Your strength and support are the invisible pillar upon which our army stands”, he said.

“Today, we also remember the heroes who sacrificed their lives for Georgia. Their self-sacrifice is an eternal example of what love for the homeland means. Their memory obliges us to be worthy, to protect freedom, and to continue the work they began”, Papuashvili continued.

He stressed that the Defence Forces were a symbol of Georgia’s strength, unity, and faith in the future.

“Your service reminds us that freedom is not a given - it is the result of daily struggle, hard work, and readiness. It is our duty to ensure that this struggle remains conscious, united, and unwavering”, the speaker said.

“Congratulations on the Day of the Georgian Defence Forces! Glory to Georgian soldiers! Glory to Georgia!” Papuashvili concluded.
