Georgian Parliament Vice Speaker: objective reports show Georgia leads, while political resolutions distort reality

Giorgi Kakhiani, the vice speaker of the Georgian Parliament, on Wednesday said that objective international studies presented Georgia as a regional leader, while political resolutions, such as one recently adopted in France, are based on “contradictory and politically motivated assessments”.

In his interview with Imedi TV, Kakhiani pointed to the 2026 Democracy Perception Index, where Georgia ranks as a leader in Europe in government transparency and second in the positive impact of elections.

“There are two completely contradictory assessments. On the one hand, we have an objective study that cannot have any political subtext. And on the other hand, we have a resolution of the French National Assembly that is based on views similar to those described, for example, in several European Parliament resolutions. In other words, it is a document based on perceptions and unreal facts, and it has a political context”, he said.

He argued that the narrative of rigged elections from 2024 continued to be pushed despite evidence to the contrary.

“What does this indicate? What are they accusing us of? Why do they claim there is democratic backsliding in Georgia and speak to us in the language of sanctions and blackmail? If you look at the French resolution, it suggests a context as if there was election fraud in 2024. In other words, the perception that was created during the 2024 elections - that the elections were allegedly rigged - continues to this day”, he concluded.

The Alliance of Democracies Foundation has released its 2026 Democracy Perception Index (DPI), the world’s largest and most comprehensive annual study on how people perceive democracy. The report highlights significant achievements for Georgia, placing the country at the forefront of European transparency and democratic optimism.

According to the report, the Georgian government ranks first in Europe for transparency. Notably, Georgia is the only European nation where government transparency received an overall positive evaluation.
