Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili on Tuesday received an Independence Day congratulatory message from his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella, who emphasised the importance of continued cooperation between Tbilisi and Rome.

In his congratulatory letter, Mattarella highlighted the long-standing friendship between the two countries and expressed support for Georgia’s European integration path.

“Today, as the friendly Georgian people celebrate and mark the country’s independence, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the Italian Republic”, he said.

“Despite the difficult geopolitical situation, which remains aggravated by the consequences of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the numerous crisis hotspots in regions near our borders, Tbilisi and Rome continue to foster new opportunities for mutual cooperation in the spirit of long-standing and fruitful friendship”, Mattarella continued.

The President further noted that Italy values its relationship with Georgia and continues to seek opportunities for closer cooperation.

“Based on these premises, Italy continues to closely follow Georgia’s path toward the European Union and hopes that this course will continue with renewed and strong momentum, founded on constructive interaction and, above all, full commitment to the principles of European integration and democratic values”, the President said.

Mattarella also recalled Kavelashvili’s participation in the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games and wished Georgia prosperity and success in the future.

“I fondly recall your participation in the opening ceremony of the XXV Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games, and once again, Mr. President, I wish you prosperity and a successful future”, he concluded.
