Tbilisi City Hall intensifies cleanup after heavy rainfall causes flooding, damage across capital

Tbilisi City Hall is conducting intensive cleanup operations across the capital following heavy rainfall on Friday that damaged infrastructure, flooded streets, private homes and caused mudslides and a retaining-wall collapse.

Employees of City Hall services, district administrations, the Emergency Management Service, and Tbilservice Group are working around the clock to clear debris, pump out water, and restore normal conditions, with particular impact reported in Vake, Mtatsminda, Krtsanisi, Chughureti, and Nadzaladevi districts.

The Drainage and Stormwater Network Service of Tbilservice Group is operating in emergency mode, washing clogged drainage networks, cleaning wells, and clearing roadways of soil and gravel brought down by mudslides.

Giorgi Papava, Head of Tbilservice Group, noted that more than 500 personnel and 30 employees have been mobilised across the affected areas.

“The heavy rainfall in the capital caused problems in all ten districts. Stones and gravel have been washed onto roadways. Our employees are carrying out cleanup operations around the clock. The heaviest rainfall occurred particularly in the Vake, Mtatsminda, and Krtsanisi districts. More than 500 personnel and 30 employees have been mobilized across all areas and are involved in the cleanup operations. The process will continue until the problems are fully resolved”, he said.

The heaviest impact was reported in the Chughureti, Vake, Krtsanisi and Mtatsminda districts, where private houses and basements were flooded. A retaining wall also collapsed at 21 Tsiurikh Street in Okrokana.

Several streets and areas surrounding metro stations were flooded, while a landslide on Sanerge Street in the Nadzaladevi district damaged the wall of a residential house. No one was injured. The Nadzaladevi District Administration offered temporary accommodation to the affected three-member family.

In addition, plaster fell from the facades of several buildings in different parts of the capital. On Bakhtrioni Street, vehicles were caught in debris from soil that had slid down a slope.

In Legvtakhevi, the swollen river has already returned to its previous level, with cleanup operations in the area expected to continue in the coming days.

Representatives of Tbilisi City Hall are continuing to monitor the situation and remain on site until the consequences of the heavy rainfall are fully addressed. Calls received through the municipal hotline are being responded to immediately.
