A session of the Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church will be held on Tuesday at the Patriarchate of Georgia. Bishops are expected to select three candidates for the Patriarchal throne.

At an expanded assembly, scheduled to be held before May 17, the Synod will choose the 142nd Patriarch of Georgia from among the candidates selected today.

If none of the candidates receives a majority of votes at the expanded council, a second round will be held between the two candidates who receive the highest number of votes.

“The main issue of this session is the selection of three patriarchal candidates. They will be chosen by secret ballot. Every bishop is entitled to vote for a bishop who meets the criteria set out in the statute governing the administration of the Georgian Church. The date of the expanded council will also be set during this session”, Archpriest David Tatanashvili said.
