Georgian PM says Government will continue to rely on Georgian people

Georgian prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday said his government places its hope in the Georgian people and remains open to political dialogue with the European Union, provided such engagement is possible.

Speaking to the journalists, Kobakhidze emphasised that the bedrock of his team’s strategy has always been, and will continue to be, the citizens of Georgia.

“We rely on the Georgian people, our team has always relied on the Georgian people, and we will continue to do so in the future. As for the European Union, of course, the political dialogue will continue within the framework of what is possible. As soon as we see the readiness of the European bureaucracy to resume dialogue with the Georgian government, we will immediately show complete openness, although so far their attitude is different”, the PM said.

He further criticised what he described as a “Soviet-style” reluctance from European bureaucracy to engage in open discussion.

“We see that there is a certain Soviet approach, when they are afraid of dialogue, discussion. The weak side fears dialogue - those who are weak in arguments. Of course, the European Union is much larger than us - that is not what I mean - but it is the weak side in the sense that the truth is not on the side of the European Union; the truth is on our side. We will talk to everyone with whom conversation is possible, who signals and expresses openness for dialogue and discussion; this is our attitude. With this approach, we have managed to bring success to the country until now, despite immense difficulties, and this is how we intend to continue working with anyone who desires it”, Kobakhidze concluded.
