Georgian Parliament official questions motives behind EU Ambassador’s remarks

Gia Volski

Gia Volski

Gia Volski, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and the first vice speaker of the parliament, on Sunday said that recent “shameless” statements by European officials should be examined in depth and interpreted within the framework of broader political objectives pursued by Brussels.

Volski’s comments came after Paweł Herczyński, the EU ambassador to Georgia, stated that “Georgia and its warm and hospitable people” must not be allowed to slip back into a period marked by “violence, civil conflict, poverty, hardship, and corruption”.

In his interview with Imedi TV, Volski noted that the underlying aim was to preserve influence in the strategically important Middle Corridor region and reshape Georgia’s role from an equal partner into what he described as a compliant entity.

“For this, they need a change of government”, the official said.

Volski further claimed that tens of millions had been spent to encourage revolutionary processes in Georgia.

“The first threat we heard was that they would support extremists and mobilise a certain part of society through NGOs, which would then develop a revolutionary process; tens of millions were spent. This scenario did not work; it failed”, he continued.

“The second threat was direct: a European commissioner calls the prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze and tells him that if you do not bow down and follow instructions, the same will happen to you - you see what happened to the prime minister of Slovakia. He says this in plain text. This is a threat of revolution and the taking of a life”, he concluded.
