Irakli Kobakhidze

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday said the Georgian Football Federation and its President Levan Kobiashvili did all their best over the years to create a special “historic” victory as the Georgian national football team on Tuesday reached its first ever European Championship.

Kobakhidze’s comments followed after UEFA on Thursday said that the EURO 2024 qualification was the culmination of years of football development, planning and innovation by the ambitious Georgian Football Federation, which had leveraged multiple types of UEFA support alongside its work to maximise its impact.

In his remarks, Kobakhidze noted that UEFA's appreciation of the special contribution of the Georgian Football Federation was “absolutely logical”.

“First of all, this victory is the merit of the team members and players. They were the ones who won the important game on March 26th. At the same time, UEFA's statement is absolutely correct that this success has been built up over the years and that the Football Federation was at the head of all this”, Kobakhidze said.
