Georgia’s ruling party Sec Gen: Georgia ready for dialogue with EU, but “speaking from above” unacceptable

Kakha Kaladze

Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Friday said that Georgia remains open to dialogue with the European Union, but stressed that what he described as a condescending approach toward the country was unacceptable.

In his remarks, Kaladze noted that certain foreign-funded organisations and actors have contributed to deepening polarisation within Georgian society.

“We know very well that their main policy, their financing, is directed toward deepening polarisation and division within society, something we have been talking about for a long time. Let us call things by their proper names and identify those who are deepening polarisation and acting destructively”, he said.

The official argued that financial resources entering the country over the years have been used not only to support specific groups but also to build networks aimed at influencing domestic political processes.

“We have seen how violent groups operated, groups that are financed from abroad. Of course, the funds that entered the country over many years were aimed at creating an agent network, and specific individuals were paid salaries for this. Supposedly, non-governmental organisations were acting with good intentions and concern for society, but everyone knows very well what their real motivation and objective were. It should also be noted that these funds were used to organise revolutions and coups in the country. The deepening of polarisation itself is clear evidence of an effort to divide the Georgian people”, Kaladze stressed.

Commenting on resolutions adopted by the European Parliament, Kaladze said such documents lack credibility because, in his view, they were based on misinformation rather than factual evidence.

“We have seen many resolutions and know how they are adopted. They have no value because they are based entirely on lies and falsehoods, without any concrete facts or truth. We have seen many similar resolutions in the past”, he noted.

He further highlighted that the Georgian authorities have repeatedly expressed readiness to restore dialogue with European partners, while criticising what he described as an unacceptable tone in relations with Georgia.

“The slander, insults, and threats continue. We are ready for dialogue. What is categorically unacceptable is the attitude of someone speaking to us from above and wagging a finger at us. Georgia is not anyone’s backyard. It is an independent country and a sovereign state. Everyone should show respect for the Georgian people, our statehood, and our independence”, Kaladze concluded.
