Georgian PM: Georgia targeted over its decision to protect sovereignty and national interests

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday accused what he described as the “deep state” of using all available tools, including once-respected European institutions, in a campaign against Georgia over the government’s “principled national position”.
In his remarks, Kobakhidze said that the resolution adopted by the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly was part of what he called an “absurd but serious process” targeting the country.
According to the Prime Minister, Georgia became a major target after 2022 because the government refused to open a “second front” against Russia and declined to join sanctions imposed on Moscow, arguing that such steps would contradict the country’s national interests.
“It is easy to explain why Georgia, the Georgian people and their legitimately elected government became the main target of the deep state after 2022, when Georgia refused to open a second front and join sanctions against Russia”, Kobakhidze said.
He added that, unlike in 2008, Georgia “did not fall for another adventure” and instead chose to firmly protect its sovereignty, peace and economic interests.
Kobakhidze said the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s resolution repeated what he described as “absurd accusations” used by European bureaucratic circles to encourage radicalism and revolutionary processes in Georgia, with the alleged goal of changing the government.
“The resolution adopted by the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly is part of this process. It fully repeats the absurd allegations used by European bureaucracy acting under informal oligarchic influence to encourage radicalism and revolutionary developments in Georgia, which, according to their calculations, should ultimately lead to a change of government and the return of their obedient agents to power”, the Prime Minister continued.
Kobakhidze also argued that the accusations contained in the resolution were contradicted by OSCE and ODIHR assessments.
He pointed out that the resolution questioned the legitimacy of Georgia’s 2024 parliamentary elections, while the OSCE and its Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) had assessed the elections as competitive and conducted.
The Prime Minister cited Swiss delegation head to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Daniel Fässler, who said during the session that Georgia’s elections were “well organized and fair” and that “there were no violations”, although their outcome was unwelcome for some European countries.
Kobakhidze claimed that the reason for this dissatisfaction was that Georgian voters had made a conscious choice in favor of the ruling party rather than “foreign-backed forces”.
He added that the results of the 2025 local government elections further confirmed public support for the ruling party, saying it received the backing of more than 1.1 million voters.
