Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili said on Tuesday that Georgia had prevailed in all legal disputes against Russia under the leadership of the Georgian Dream Government, adding that the rulings had established Russia’s responsibility for the occupation of Georgian territories.
In his remarks, Kavelashvili noted that international law clearly recognises two Georgian territories as being occupied by the Russian Federation and that Russia committed war crimes.
“We have been engaged in legal disputes with the Russian state across multiple international forums, and in every case the Georgian state, under the leadership of the Georgian Dream Government, has prevailed. In each dispute, we established Russia’s responsibility for the occupation of our territories. It committed a crime against our country, and this is an established fact, he said.
Kavelashvili further said that the opposition sought to portray the situation as though the Georgian Government was defending Russia’s interests and speaking on behalf of the Russian people. He stressed that the Government has its own responsibilities and acts in accordance with Georgia’s national interests.
“During the August days, when these young men [Georgian soldiers] performed heroic deeds, we had a Government that bore responsibility for the state and its people. Based on that responsibility, they took a reckless step and committed a crime against their own people. They are raising the question of whether Russia or Georgia started the war in order to prevent these issues from being discussed and to keep the Georgian people from learning the truth. It is a tragedy that they do not want the Georgian people to know the full truth about the actions of the Government at the time”, the President concluded.
