Georgia’s ruling party official says AfD success, Iceland’s EU stance should be ‘signal to Brussels’

Levan Machavariani, First Deputy Chair of the Georgian Dream parliamentary faction, on Tuesday described the electoral success of Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) as a signal to Brussels, also pointing to Iceland’s decision not to pursue EU membership and growing public concerns about the bloc’s future.

Machavariani made the remarks while commenting on the AfD’s recent electoral performance and what he described as broader political shifts across Europe.

“This should be a signal to Brussels, especially against the background of Iceland recently deciding not only not to join the European Union, but even not to resume negotiations”, he said.

He also referred to a European Parliament survey that, he said, showed growing pessimism among EU citizens about the bloc’s future.

“All of this was followed by the victory of Alternative for Germany, as well as a European Parliament survey showing that the population of the European Union views the future of the EU very pessimistically. These are all signals that Brussels’ current ruling class should take into account”, Machavariani concluded.
