Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday to discuss Georgia-UN cooperation, the organisation’s role in Georgia’s conflict resolution process, and opportunities to further strengthen the partnership.
The meeting highlighted the longstanding and productive cooperation between Georgia and the United Nations, as well as the importance of multilateral partnerships in promoting lasting stability and prosperity.
The parties also discussed challenges to international peace and security. During the meeting, it was noted that the central focus of the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly on peace, security and sustainable development underscored the growing relevance of these issues.
The discussion further addressed the humanitarian and security challenges in Georgia’s Russian-occupied territories.
Kobakhidze thanked the UN Secretary-General for his support for Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and stressed the importance of the UN General Assembly resolution on the “Status of Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia, and the Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia, Georgia”.
“Pleased to meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. We discussed Georgia-UN cooperation, the UN’s role in Georgia’s conflict resolution process, and opportunities to strengthen our partnership,” Kobakhidze said in a social media post following the meeting.
The Prime Minister also signed the UN Guestbook of Honour.
