Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday said that the state and the church were separated, and the respect of the principle of secularism outlined in the Constitution was crucial.
In his remarks, Kobakhidze noted that the respect of the principle of secularism was enshrined in the Constitution, and the relationship between the state and the church, as well as between the Government and the church, was based on this principle.
“As for the relationship between the state and the church, naturally, they are separated. We respect the principle of secularism outlined in the Constitution, and relations between the state, Government, and church are built on this foundation”, he pointed out.
Kobakhidze further highlighted the opinions of clergy on political matters, saying “it shouldn’t surprise or upset anyone that they have specific views”.
“You mentioned that a certain trend has been emerging over this time, and once again, I’ll repeat that it shouldn’t offend or anger you”, the Prime Minister concluded.
