PM: independence, sovereignty key to Georgia’s peace, development

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday reiterated his Government’s aspiration to join the European Union but stressed that the main guarantee of peace for the country remained its own independence and sovereignty.
Speaking to journalists, Kobakhidze underlined the importance of protecting the sovereignty and independence for which many generations of Georgians have fought.
“Of course, our wish and our goal is EU membership. However, in order to preserve peace and ensure development in our country, we must first and foremost safeguard Georgia’s sovereignty and independence - values for which numerous generations struggled, including in the 1980s and 1990s. Independence and sovereignty are the most essential guarantees of peace and development in our nation”, the PM said.
