Georgian PM calls Maia Sandu’s statement on possible Romania reunification “astonishing”, “very sad for Moldova”

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday described Moldovan President Maia Sandu’s statement regarding possible reunification with Romania as “astonishing” and a “very sad development” for Moldova.

In his remarks, Kobakhidze noted that a political leader expressing readiness to support the loss of a country’s independence is deeply troubling.

“For me, first of all, such a statement is astonishing. A country’s political leader declares that she is ready to vote in favour of the loss of the country’s independence. When such a statement is made by a political leader, I don’t even know what comment can be made about it”, he said.

The Prime Minister added that the remarks were particularly unfortunate given Moldova’s shared historical path with Georgia.

“Naturally, this is a very sad development for Moldova, for a country that gained independence together with us in the early 1990s. The rest is Moldova’s own affair - they will probably sort out their own issues themselves”, Kobakhidze concluded.
