Georgian Parliament Speaker: today’s EU has drifted away from everything traditionally associated with Europe

An increasing number of people are openly discussing what the European Union’s bureaucracy has long tried to conceal, said on Wednesday the Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.

Papuashvili’s comments came after Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna stated that the European Union often punishes countries that deviate from its political line.

In his remarks, Papuashvili noted that part of the EU’s bureaucratic establishment is directly involved in creating the crisis into which the European Union has been led.

“The European Union, a project of peace, has been turned into an instrument of pressure, a tool for advancing a harmful political agenda and imposing non-existent ideologies. Today’s EU, under the control of Brussels, has drifted away from everything traditionally associated with Europe. In today’s European Union, Europe remains only in name. In terms of values, philosophy, goals, and future vision, there is less and less that is truly European left within it”, he said.

The Speaker further noted that the United States - a country that played a key role in supporting Europe and the creation of the EU as a union for peace - now sees that the European Union has been taken over by the current bureaucracy and has lost its original value-based foundations.

“The United States sees that, in the hands of today’s bureaucracy, the EU has lost its value-based and other defining characteristics. We hear the same from within the EU itself - in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, France, and other countries, opposition to policies imposed by the Brussels bureaucracy is growing ever louder. What we spoke about years ago is once again being confirmed today as the truth”, Papuashvili concluded.
