EU mainstream policy not aimed at democracy, says Georgian Parliament official

Irakli Kadagishvili, the chair of the Georgian Parliament’s regional policy and self-government committee, on Wednesday stated that the current mainstream of European Union policy was not aimed at democracy.
In his remarks, Kadagishvili noted that the EU’s primary objective in its relations with Georgia was to secure a government that follows external orders.
“If a government is obedient and fulfills their orders, then everything is acceptable. Even Nika Gvaramia’s television policy would be considered ideal - when five TV channels speak in one voice, as we were told for years: ‘news is made here’. This is their democracy. Those in Georgia who truly fight for democracy clearly understand what real democracy is and what pseudo-democracy looks like - one that cannot tolerate dissenting opinions”, the official said.
Speaking in the context of discussions around potential sanctions on television broadcasters, Kadagishvili also claimed that those who genuinely advocate for democracy in Georgia understand the difference between “real democracy” and what he described as its distorted form.
“That is why they will also target television channels and, in general, free thought. If these people are allowed, they would even ban making the sign of the cross. This is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, going so far as to speak about banning television channels in the name of democracy. This is a biblical example that aptly reflects the current situation”, he concluded.
