Georgian President reaffirms constitutional values, national sovereignty in parliamentary address

During his annual report to Parliament on the most critical issues facing the nation, Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili on Tuesday underscored the foundational principles of the Georgian state, emphasising that the country’s progress is rooted in the preamble of its Constitution.

President Kavelashvili reminded the assembly that the Supreme Law of Georgia mandates the strengthening of state independence, the establishment of a democratic social order, economic freedom, and the maintenance of a social, legal state.

“This is an oath our people have taken before themselves and future generations. Naturally, our state institutions are imbued with this very responsibility”, he noted.

Reflecting on the nation’s survival through the centuries, Kavelashvili noted that Georgia’s history proves the struggle for homeland, faith, and truth remains “without alternative”. He highlighted that despite its small size, Georgia has maintained a unique culture and identity through sheer persistence.

“Today, the state firmly protects Georgia’s sovereignty, national interests, and the fundamental values that define the very essence of our statehood. For centuries, our people have, with perseverance, resilience, and faith, written the history of a small but dignified and proud nation. For many centuries, the Georgian people have created a unique culture, distinct and characteristic only of us, which, alongside our history, vividly demonstrates who we were, who we are, and who we strive to become”, Kavelashvili told the legislative body.

“Our long history shows that the fight for homeland, faith, and truth is unavoidable, as evidenced by the fact that we not only survived but also preserved our national identity. This is the path our ancestors walked, and every Georgian citizen today is obliged to faithfully follow it”, he continued.

The President added that Georgia’s long-term development required instilling love for the homeland as a starting point for future generations.

“Today, we are responsible for what Georgia’s future will look like and what kind of country we want to build for our children. For the country’s sustainable development, future generations must embrace love for their homeland, respect for sovereignty and independence, and uphold family values and traditions”, Kavelashvili noted.

“In the context of global challenges, it is vital that the state ensures, within its capacity, the development of physically healthy, critically thinking, and internationally competitive young people, for whom the sense of freedom will always be closely linked to their homeland”, the President concluded.
