Georgian Parliament Speaker: until EU condemns October 4 violence, its words hold no value for Georgian society

Georgian Parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Monday said the attack on Georgia, Georgian society, and the will of the Georgian people to organise their country according to their own choice was continuing.

In his remarks, Papuashvili noted that the recent developments represented a test of the country’s sovereignty.

“We have seen various methods of how Georgia is being attacked, including attempts to undermine its right to make independent decisions. One of the manifestations of this is the various meetings and statements coming from Brussels”, the speaker said.

He emphasised that until Brussels clearly and firmly condemns the violence of October 4 and the attack on the Presidential Palace in any format - whether by foreign ministers, the council, or other platforms - statements from European institutions will have no value for Georgian society.

Papuashvili also claimed that the support expressed by the spokesperson of the European Commission for the events surrounding the October 4 developments amounted to support for violence and attempts to overthrow the government.

“Five months have passed, and we have not heard a single word of condemnation from Brussels. Everyone there remains silent. Until there is a clear condemnation, any statement regarding Georgia should be viewed in this context - as a continuation of support for anti-democratic forces in the country”, Papuashvili concluded.
