Radical opposition’s coordinated attacks on Church reflect spiritual decline, says Georgian Parliament official

Rati Ionatamishvili

Rati Ionatamishvili, the chair of the parliamentary committee on human rights protection and civil integration, on Wednesday accused the domestic radical opposition of conducting a long-term, orchestrated campaign against the Georgian Orthodox Church.

In an interview with Imedi TV, Ionatamishvili claimed that these actions are not random but are carried out under specific instructions to undermine the authority of the Church.

“For many years, the entire radical opposition has been deliberately, under instructions and in a coordinated manner, trying to attack and undermine the Georgian Church”, the official said.

According to Ionatamishvili, the primary reason for these attacks is the Church’s unwavering support for the Georgian state and national identity.

“Ultimately, this points to their moral decline. On the other hand, they cannot forgive the Georgian Church for standing by the Georgian state and its loyalty to Georgian identity; this is the main reason and the goal behind these coordinated attacks”, he concluded.
