Georgian PM slams “disinformation-laden statements” from segments of European bureaucracy

Georgian prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday criticised what he described as “disinformation-laden statements” from segments of European bureaucracy, calling the issue a “serious problem” that requires change.

Speaking to the journalists, Kobakhidze said that his government has repeatedly had to respond to such claims, which he characterised as an “unfortunate reality”.

“Disinformation coming from European bureaucratic structures is a serious problem. We talk about it constantly, and often have to make comments and responses. Statements filled with disinformation are a regrettable reality, and we hope the situation will change in this direction”, the PM said.

He also noted that several politicians attending the summit had previously made what he described as unfair statements about Georgia and its people. While declining to name individuals, he said such rhetoric was “very unfortunate”, though not unexpected in the current political environment.

“At this summit, there were specific politicians who have made unjust statements about the Georgian people and our country. I will not go into details or name names, but this is the reality we have to work in, and we must confront it”, he continued.

Despite the criticism, Kobakhidze emphasised the importance of maintaining and developing international relationships. He expressed optimism that a fair approach from international partners would help resolve existing tensions.

“Here we have not heard any critical statements towards Georgia at all. There was no discussion at all in this format, I had conversations with many leaders. In this format, you have the opportunity to talk with more than half of the leaders, this is the format. I talked to everyone about the reality in our country, we shared our opinions with everyone, this is the general content that I can convey to you regarding this format”, he concluded.
