Kakha Kaladze, the mayor of Tbilisi and secretary general of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Thursday said the European bureaucracy is actively fighting against the Georgian state, a trend he claims is no longer a surprise to the Georgian public.
In his interview with Imedi Tv, Kaladze noted that external attacks on the country have become significantly more blatant in recent years, arguing that while such interference was previously conducted covertly, it has now moved into the open.
“Years ago, they were doing this covertly, secretly, through the involvement of non-governmental organisations, with money coming from abroad and that money being spent on politics. Today, they are already openly confronting the Georgian state”, he said.
“There is an explanation for this. First, I want to emphasise that all of their statements and threats are based on lies. Second, the Georgian government chose peace. With its firm position, the Georgian government did not join the sanctions, which would have been devastating for the Georgian economy and the Georgian people. The Georgian people chose stability, the country is developing and moving forward economically”, Kaladze continued.
The official added that the Georgian authorities remain open to dialogue with international partners but reject what he described as pressure and threats.
“We have repeatedly stated that we need friends and partners. We are ready at any time to speak openly on certain issues. However, statements containing threats and the pressure being exerted on the Georgian state are unacceptable to us”, Kaladze concluded.
