Georgian PM: media freedom in Moldova has long been trampled - only two state channels remain

Georgian prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday said that media freedom in Moldova had long been “trampled underfoot”, stressing that only two television channels remain in the country.

In his remarks, Kobakhidze noted that given these circumstances, it was unsurprising that Moldova was now attacking Georgia's free media as well.

“In Moldova, media freedom has long been trampled underfoot. Only two television stations have been left - Public Broadcaster 1 and Public Broadcaster 2. In reality, only two state television channels are functioning in Moldova. This also indicates the general situation, although Moldova is not being criticised for it”, the PM said.

“In such a context, it is not surprising that Moldova is attacking Georgian free media. They restricted free media in Moldova and are now attacking free media in Georgia. This is an absolutely logical chain of events”, Kobakhidze concluded.
