Parliament Speaker says 2026 will mark new starting point for Georgia in New Year address

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has extended New Year greetings to citizens of Georgia, saying that the country welcomes 2026 with hope, clear plans, and renewed energy, stressing that the new year will become a new starting point for the country.
In his address, Papuashvili noted that 2025, despite being filled with difficulties and challenges, was a historic and defining year for Georgia.
He emphasised that the past year clearly determined Georgia’s state choice and national priorities.
He further added that the country withstood decisive pressure aimed at limiting its sovereign rights, influencing the will of the Georgian people, and subordinating the country to external agendas.
“2025 was the year when Georgia firmly refused to participate in others’ scenarios and to allow games with the country’s future. Together, we defended this choice and demonstrated strong unity. Together, we restored the concept of national interest to the political and public space as the main foundation of state action”, Papuashvili said.
Speaking about the year ahead, he stated that 2026 should mark the beginning of a new phase of gradual, thoughtful, and steady development. This process, he noted, must be based on Georgia’s historical heritage while also clearly defining a modern national identity appropriate to the era.
“The world must clearly understand who we are, where we stand, what drives us, what we protect, and what we are building”, he continued, adding that Georgia’s path is guided by the wisdom and legacy of its ancestors and love for the homeland.
Papuashvili also highlighted that in 2026 Georgia will mark the 1700th anniversary of the country’s Christianisation, calling it a powerful symbol of historical continuity, spiritual foundation, and civilizational role.
Congratulating citizens from Bodbe Monastery, the Parliament Speaker wished peace and unity to the country.
“May Saint Nino bless all of Georgia and protect our parents and children. Let us live in unity, because strength lies in unity”, he concluded.
