Tactical team of Coast Guard of Georgian Border Police Department joins NATO maritime security operation Sea Guardian

Twelve members of the Coast Guard Department Law Enforcement Tactical Team from the Georgian Border Police on Wednesday participated in the NATO Maritime Security Operation Sea Guardian.

Before participating in the Operation, the personnel underwent three days of predeployment training at the NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre.

After completing this training, they boarded the Hellenic Navy Ship HS AEGEAN, where they engaged in activities outlined in the operation's overall plan for three weeks. Their tasks during this period included various boarding procedures and specialised training related to NATO's operational activities.

“It is noteworthy, that in the previous year, for the first time in the history of Georgia, the Georgian unit participated in the NATO Maritime Security Operation under the status of Operational Partner. Among the non-member countries, Georgia has become the first aspirant country, which, after the successful completion of the 4-year certification program, has been recognized as an Operational Partner for the Operation “Sea Guardian” by the North Atlantic Council”, the Georgian Border Police said.

NATO Operation Sea Guardian is the Alliance's only maritime operation. Its main objectives include countering terrorism, promoting freedom of navigation, building maritime security capacity, preventing illegal economic activities, and enhancing maritime situational awareness.
