Georgian National Bank Governor highlights Georgia’s strong macroeconomic performance, resilient banking sector as key factors driving international interest

Natia Turnava, the Governor of the National Bank of Georgia, on Friday said that hosting the 51st International Banking Conference in Georgia underscored the country’s increasing importance as a regional financial centre.
The event, organised by the Banking Association for Central and Eastern Europe (BACEE) and Cartu Bank, brought together more than 250 delegates from nearly 30 countries and around 100 institutions.
Speaking at the 51st International Banking Conference, Turnava highlighted Georgia’s strong macroeconomic performance and resilient banking sector as key factors driving international interest.
She emphasised that despite a turbulent global environment in recent years, Georgia’s economy has demonstrated remarkable stability and growth, while the banking system remains one of the strongest and most advanced in the region.
“The Georgian banking system remains strong and resilient. It is well-capitalized, maintains strong liquidity buffers, and demonstrates solid profitability. As of February 2026, return on equity stood at 22.4%, while asset quality remained high. The non-performing loan ratio is at a historically low level of just 2.47%. Credit activity continues to expand in line with economic growth. In February 2026, the annual growth rate of the credit portfolio reached 14.3%, mainly driven by lending in the national currency”, Turnava said.
She further highlighted that a strong financial sector, supported by a modern regulatory framework, was attracting the interest of international investors, and these efforts were recognised globally.
“S&P Global Ratings notes that Georgia’s banking regulation is among the most advanced in the region, while asset quality is among the best. Strong financial sector indicators, combined with solid macroeconomic fundamentals and an open, business-friendly environment, create a supportive foundation for international investors and companies, and Georgia welcomes global players to its market”, she concluded.
