Georgia’s Foreign Ministry slams European Parliament report as “detached from reality” and “misleading”

The ministry of foreign affairs of Georgia on Tuesday issued a press statement sharply criticising a European Parliament report on Georgia, saying it is “completely detached from reality” and based on “intentional distortion of facts, absurd accusations, and manipulation of information”.
The statement refers to the European Parliament’s foreign affairs committee session held on Tuesday, during which MEPs voted on a report concerning Georgia as part of the European Commission’s 2025 assessment. The report was prepared by the European Parliament’s rapporteur on Georgia, Lithuanian MEP Rasa Juknevičienė.
The Ministry noted that the report damaged the reputation of the European Parliament and undermined public trust in the European Union and its institutions in Georgia, which it said was reflected in public sentiment and political reactions.
The statement further expressed concern over the use of EU institutions for “targeted attacks” against the Georgian state, democratic institutions, society, values, and the Georgian Orthodox Church, calling it offensive to religious sentiments.
It further stated that the report contributed to increased polarisation in Georgian society, attempted to distance the democratically elected government from the public, and encouraged anti-democratic processes and radical attitudes.
The statement further condemned what it called pressure and threats against Georgian society, describing it as interference in internal affairs and a matter of concern for any sovereign state.
Additionally, the ministry criticised what it called the “instrumentalisation” of Georgia’s foreign policy priorities and EU integration process, warning against attempts to impose accession conditions linked to national security and regional stability risks.
Despite the criticism, the ministry reiterated that Georgia remains a responsible and committed partner of the European Union and expressed readiness for cooperation based on mutual respect, trust, and shared values, while calling for a constructive and fair approach from EU institutions.
“The instrumentalisation of Georgia's foreign policy priorities and geopolitical issues, the use of the European integration process as a political weapon, and attempts to set preconditions for EU accession that are directly linked to the country’s national security and the creation of additional risks of escalation in the region are unacceptable. Such an unfair attitude on the part of the EU institution undermines the relations between Georgia and the European Union and damages our common interests. Georgia, as a responsible and loyal partner of the EU, reaffirms its readiness for mutually beneficial cooperation based on respect, trust, and shared values, and expects a constructive and fair approach from the EU institutions”, the statement said.
