Georgian PM: EU not interested in supporting revolutions in Georgia, but some forces influence its bureaucracy

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated in an interview with TRT World that while he does not believe the European Union seeks to overthrow the Georgian Government, there are visible influences within European institutions that negatively affect decision-making processes.

“I don’t think it is in the European Union’s interest to overthrow the government in Georgia, but there is an influence, which is quite obvious. For example, just before the attempted coup on October 4, when the opposition tried to storm the President’s Administration building, an official spokesperson for the European Commission expressed support for that rally, which was called a ‘peaceful revolution’. These are facts. We don’t think it’s in the EU’s objective interest to support revolutions in Georgia, but unfortunately, there are certain forces that negatively affect the decision-making process within the European bureaucracy”, the PM said.

According to the Prime Minister, the EU Ambassador to Georgia has also openly supported the opposition ahead of the 2024 parliamentary elections, making explicit statements in favour of opposition parties.

“We have video recordings of such statements, including those made by the EU Ambassador to Georgia, who directly expressed support for the opposition. When we talk about democracy, the EU Ambassador in Georgia directly supported the opposition in the 2024 parliamentary elections. He made very clear statements in favour of the opposition and against the ruling party. Does that align with democratic principles? Of course not”, he continued.

He added that such actions undermine democratic values within the European Union itself.

“We are witnessing developments that erode democratic principles in the EU. These are the steps taken by the European bureaucracy. We hope that their attitude toward the Georgian people will change and become more fair”, the Prime Minister concluded.
