Georgia PM highlights March 31 as defining moment in nation’s history

Georgian prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday marked the anniversary of the March 31, 1991, independence referendum, calling it a “distinguished day” in the modern history of Georgia.

In his message, Kobakhidze emphasised the historic significance of the vote, which saw a unified nation - including the populations of Abkhazia and Samachablo regions - vote overwhelmingly for the restoration of Georgia's sovereignty.

“March 31 is a distinguished day in the modern history of Georgia! On March 31, 1991, a nationwide referendum was held in which all of Georgia - including the populations of Abkhazia and Samachablo - unanimously voted for Georgia's sovereign future, making their voices heard by the entire world. The March 31 referendum created the unwavering legal foundation upon which the modern Georgian state is built. It is our duty to cherish this invaluable achievement, to protect it with dignity, and to strengthen the statehood that the 1991 referendum solidified”, the PM said.
