Georgian Parliament Speaker says EU risks becoming a ‘Soviet-style Union’ with current policies

Georgian Parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Thursday sharply criticised the European Union’s current political direction, describing it as “anti-democratic, anti-human, and anti-European”, and claimed that under such policies, the EU has no future as a union.

Speaking about EU bureaucrats, Papuashvili said that European Commissioners, who are not elected by the people, are acting against other nations and are, in effect, enemies of the Union.

“With such anti-democratic, anti-humane, and anti-European policies, the European Union has no future to continue as the European Union; because if anything remains of the EU as a result of these policies, it is a Soviet Union”, the speaker said.

Papuashvili added that the United States has warned the EU that continuing on this path could lead it into a “civilizational abyss”, making membership discussions irrelevant and raising questions about whether the EU can remain truly European or turn into a structure reminiscent of the Soviet era.

“This is our mission - today, Georgia stands as a defender of the European Union. These bureaucrats and MEPs who attack other peoples are enemies of the EU, while Georgia supports the Union. We protect the EU because we are active partners of Europe and do not want European civilization to collapse before our eyes”, he concluded.
