MEP Thierry Mariani to European Parliament: stop interference and pressure on Georgia’s democratically elected government

Member of the European Parliament Thierry Mariani on Wednesday criticised what he described as political pressure from European Union institutions against Georgia during a debate on the country held in the European Parliament.

Speaking during the discussion, Mariani said the Parliament continues to focus on Georgia with what he called “outrageous rhetoric, political pressure, blackmail and financial threats from Brussels” directed at the country.

“This Parliament continues to focus on Georgia with outrageous words, political pressure, blackmail and financial threats from Brussels against this country. This time it is an attack against the Georgian Dream party - a clear manipulation, because you cannot discredit a political movement that was supported by over 50 percent of citizens in the 2024 elections and has a solid parliamentary majority. They have a political legitimacy that many EU countries lack”, Mariani said.

He also condemned what he described as “shameful neo-colonial methods,” particularly when it comes to what he called attempts to manipulate legitimate legal processes in Georgia. Referring to Georgian judges, Mariani said they “should not receive instructions from Brussels”.

“These shameful neocolonial methods must stop, especially when it comes to manipulating legitimate legal processes, as is the case with Georgian judges. They should not be taking instructions from Brussels. Since 2024, you have been using methods to undermine the legitimately elected government. Stop this interference, pressure and blackmail in this democratic country”, he concluded.
