Georgia-US relations back on track, says Georgian Parliament Committee Chair

Levan Makhashvili, the chair of the Georgian Parliament’s European integration committee, on Thursday stated that relations between Georgia and the United States have been restored, saying that “the ice has been broken” between Tbilisi and Washington.

Speaking to journalists, Makhashvili said he would not speculate on future developments but emphasised that it can now be “confidently stated” that Georgia-US relations are back on track.

According to him, the current goal is to reach a level of engagement that fully restores the countries’ strategic partnership.

“I will no longer get ahead of events or predict exactly what will happen and how, but we can boldly state that Georgia-US relations have been restored. Our goal is to reach a point where we can say this is the level that satisfies us and represents the restoration of a strategic partnership. I hope that the developments expected in May will substantially support this process”, he noted.

The official added that progress had already been made in security, economic, and education cooperation to restore previously “frozen” relations and move toward the next stage of engagement.

Makhashvili highlighted that the recent diplomatic contacts, including visits and phone calls in April, indicated that political will existed on both sides.

“There is political will, and the working process is ongoing. The exact date is not important - the ice is broken, and we are trying to continue the relationship”, he concluded.
